GMC Dashboard Symbols and Meanings
A Phoenix Driver's Guide
When you’re navigating stop-and-go traffic on the I-10 or driving through the intense Phoenix summer heat, a dashboard light can be stressful. At Coulter Camelback Buick GMC, we want to ensure you know exactly what your vehicle is telling you.
Pro Tip: GMC uses a "Stoplight" system. Red lights mean stop as soon as it's safe. Yellow/Amber lights mean "Caution"—get it checked soon at our Phoenix service center to avoid a breakdown.

Engine Oil Pressure Warning (Critical)
What it means: Your GMC engine has lost oil pressure or is dangerously low on oil.
Can I drive?:NO. Pull over immediately and turn off the engine to avoid total engine failure.
The Fix: Check oil level. If full, you need a professional diagnostic for a failing pump or sensor.

Coolant Temperature Warning (Critical)
What it means: Your engine is overheating. This is extremely common during Phoenix summers.
Can I drive?:NO. Driving while overheating can warp your engine block or blow a head gasket.
Phoenix Tip: High-speed driving on the 101 in 110°F heat puts massive strain on your cooling system. Ensure your coolant is flushed every 2 years.

TPMS: Low Tire Pressure (Caution)
What it means: One or more tires are below recommended PSI.
The Phoenix Factor: In Arizona, pavement temperatures can reach 160°F. This causes air pressure to fluctuate wildly. If this light flashes, your tire may have a puncture or heat-related damage.
The Fix: Adjust pressure to the levels listed on your driver-side door jamb. If the light persists, visit us for a tire inspection.

Check Engine Light (Caution)
What it means: Your GMC's onboard computer has detected a problem with the emissions or engine management system. This ranges from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter.
Can I drive?:
• Steady Light: Yes, but schedule a diagnostic soon to prevent gas mileage drops or engine damage.
• Flashing Light:NO. This indicates a severe engine misfire. Stop driving immediately to save your engine.
The Fix: We will hook your vehicle up to a GMC diagnostic scanner to read the specific "P-code" causing the light.

Battery / Charging System Warning (Critical)
What it means: The battery is not being charged, or the charging system (alternator) has failed.
The Phoenix Factor:Arizona heat is the #1 killer of car batteries. Most batteries in the Valley only last 2–3 years. If this light pops up, your car will likely shut down completely once the remaining battery power is drained.
Can I drive?: Only to the nearest safe location or service center. Turn off your AC and radio to preserve power.
The Fix: Battery replacement or alternator repair.

ABS Sensor Light (Caution)
What it means: There is a fault in your Anti-lock Braking System. While your regular brakes will still work, the system that prevents your wheels from locking up during a slide is disabled.
Can I drive?: Yes, but use extra caution in rain or on gravel. Your vehicle will handle differently during an emergency stop.
The Fix: Usually requires a wheel speed sensor replacement or a check of the ABS control module.

Brake System Warning Light (Critical)
What it means: This is much more serious than the ABS light. It typically indicates critically low brake fluid or a hydraulic failure in the braking system.
Can I drive?:NO. Your stopping power is compromised. Have the vehicle towed to Coulter on Camelback immediately.
The Fix: We will inspect for brake line leaks, master cylinder issues, or extreme brake pad wear.

Low Fuel Warning (Caution)
What it means: You are running on your fuel reserve (typically 1–3 gallons remaining).
The Phoenix Factor: In 110°F+ weather, we recommend keeping your tank at least 1/4 full. GMC fuel pumps are cooled by being submerged in gasoline; running consistently on "E" in the Phoenix heat can cause your fuel pump to overheat and fail prematurely.
Can I drive?: Yes, but head directly to the nearest gas station.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my GMC dashboard light flashing?
A flashing light (especially the Check Engine light) indicates a severe misfire or problem that is actively damaging your engine or catalytic converter. Stop driving immediately.
Does the Arizona heat cause more dashboard lights?
Yes. Extreme heat is the #1 cause for Battery Lights (heat kills batteries faster than cold) and Coolant/Overheat lights in the Valley.
